Staff Scientist
Vanessa studied biology at the Rheinische Friedrich - Wilhelms - Universität Bonn, where she received her B.Sc., and at the Heinrich - Heine - Universität Düsseldorf for her Master’s degree. She wrote her bachelor thesis on protein aggregation in human mitochondria at the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (University Bonn) in the laboratory of Prof. W. Voos. Her master thesis on protein - protein - interactions in muscle cells was completed at the Department of Cell Biology (University Bonn) under the guidance of Prof. D. Fürst.
For her PhD she joined the research group of Prof. Franz Grus at the department of Experimental and Translational Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg - Universität Mainz. Here, she worked on the analysis of serological autoantibodies in glaucoma patients with different immunoproteomic techniques with the aim to better understand the role of adaptive immunity in glaucoma pathogenesis. The second objective was the discovery of novel autoantibody biomarkers to improve early detection of the disease and prevent vision loss by timely initiation of treatment. The discovery of new biomarkers was achieved through mass spectrometry-based methods and further validation using high-throughput antigen microarrays. Apart from her PhD project, Vanessa was able to successfully apply her expertise in the field of protein microarrays and analysis of large clinical data sets in numerous clinical studies in cooperation with the Eye Hospital Clincal Trial Center and renowned representatives of the pharmaceutical industry.
Vanessa joined the Institute of Translational Proteomics and Translational Proteomics Core Facility at the Department of Medicine at Philipps - Universität Marburg in January 2022. She manages the Olink Explore platform and related projects.
